Telephones — It is reported that a new telephone line will be built from Caribou to Fort Kent this winter, thus giving direct wire communication with the northern part of The County.
100 Years Ago – Dec. 17, 1919
Automobile — E.E. Trask made a business trip to Fort Kent Monday, going by automobile, and returning home on Tuesday. He came back by way of Madawaska Lake, a distance of 45 miles in two hours and a quarter, and reports that the roads as being far better than he expected.
75 Years Ago – Dec. 14, 1944
Youth Center — Caribou’s Youth Rec Center opened its doors to young and old alike, on Christmas Night, Dec. 25. The Center will be decorated in keeping with Christmas. A program will be presented by the students, and there will also be dancing.
50 Years Ago -Dec. 17, 1969
Tiny Tots Make Butter — Following a viewing of “Sesame Street,” which dealt with farm life, and more particularly cows, children of the Lollipop Lane Nursery School and Daycare Center experimented with the making of butter. The product was afterwards eaten on crackers.
Yule Lighting Contest — The Limestone Chamber of Commerce is again sponsoring its Annual Christmas Lighting Contest, Bruce R. Billings, president, has announced. Judging of lighting effects in Limestone and Caswell will be accomplished by a three-member committee for local service clubs Saturday evening, Dec. 27. Northern Nat’l Bank has donated a $25 Savings Bond as first prize. Second and third place winners received $10, $5 from the Limestone Chamber.

Santa Makes Appearance — Santa will be making his appearance in Caribou on Dec. 17 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon in the downtown area and on Bennett Drive from 1 to 3 p.m. Santa will be handing out candy canes and taking Christmas orders at the area businesses. Bring your children to the fine Caribou merchants and get your Christmas wishes to Santa. This Santa’s appearance is being sponsored by the caribou Chamber of Commerce.
Sleeper’s Celebrates 80th Year — A local store celebrating its 80th anniversary is planning an open house this Friday. Sleeper’s, one of Caribou’s longest operating family businesses, has scheduled the open house from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16. Founded in 1914 as a general store specializing in clothing and groceries by the late Joseph Sleeper, the business is being run by the third generation of the Sleeper family.
