Forest Service seeks input on action plan

AUGUSTA, Maine — The Maine Forest Service has begun work on Maine’s 2020 Forest Action Plan and is seeking input through a brief online survey.

Maine’s 2020 Forest Action Plan will include an assessment of current forest conditions and trends as well as identify threats and concerns.  It will also establish priorities and provide strategies for addressing both issues and ways to invest state, federal and other partner resources in ways that successfully address identified management and landscape priorities.

Forest Action Plans influence policy, management, and resource allocation decisions for ten years.  They are required by the 2008 Farm Bill. Maine’s current action plan was completed in 2010.

A short online survey gathering information about concerns, challenges and desired outcomes is available from the Maine Forest Service.  The survey will be open until Wednesday, Jan. 15.

“We encourage residents across Maine to participate in the 2020 Forest Action Plan Survey and share their insights about Maine’s forests,” said Maine Forest Service Director Patty Cormier.

“Whether you own woodland, simply appreciate the forested landscape, or engage in recreational activities on forest land, we want to hear from you,” she said. “Feedback from this survey will help guide forest management priorities over the next decade.  Conserving and protecting Maine’s forests is our core mission and supports quality of life in the Pine Tree State.”
