115 Years Ago – Jan. 11, 1905
Canning industry — George O. Goodwin of Woodland was in town Wednesday. Mr. Goodwin is proprietor of the Goodwin Pea Canning Factory, the only one in Aroostook, and an industry that is rapidly growing in the volume of business each year.
Railroads — The storm last week greatly hindered railroad traffic. The passenger train managed to get through on schedule, but the freight train business was shut down for two days. A large crew of men worked to shovel the tracks.
100 Years Ago – Jan. 14, 1920
Team drivers — Team drivers in the woods are now getting $100 per month and room and board to do the job.
Maine centennial — Mrs. R.B. Archer of this town has been asked by the committee in charge of Maine’s Centennial this year to write a poem for the occasion.
75 Years Ago – Jan. 11, 1945
Dr. Margaret Simpson heads Cary laboratory — Dr. Margaret R. Simpson, a graduate of Boston University School of Medicine, is now in charge of the laboratory of Cary Memorial Hospital, it was announced this week. Dr. Simpson specializes in neurons and mental diseases. She was recently licensed to practice medicine in the state of Maine.
50 Years Ago – Jan. 14, 1970
Moon rock here Friday — Four pieces of moon rock brought back to Earth by the crew of Apollo 11 will be on display at the Nylander Museum in Caribou Friday from 1:30 to 3 o’clock. The lunar rock fragments, which were presented to Governor Kenneth M. Curtis by President Richard Nixon, are the focal point of a special traveling exhibit arranged through government officials and prepared by the Maine State Museum.
25 Years Ago – Jan. 11, 1995
Maine Veterans Home marks fifth anniversary — Jan. 8 marks the fifth anniversary of the opening of the Maine Veteran’s Home in Caribou. On that date we admitted our first resident, a WWI Veteran from “the County.” Since then the staff has provided excellent care to 127 other veterans, their widows or spouses, and much needed emotional support to the families involved.
