Rotarian speaks on Cambodia trips

HOULTON, Maine — The Houlton Rotary Club met Monday, Dec. 30 for its regular meeting and were treated to a presentation by fellow Rotarian Ted Sussman on his recent trip to Cambodia.

Sussman and his wife travel to Cambodia to help rebuild the medical and education systems that are in need of improvement. He talked about the lack of professionals that are in that area, and he talked about the differences to what we have here in the U.S. for medical treatment.

There is no insurance in Cambodia so you have to pay up front to have any medical treatments. There are very few nurse’s to care for patients, and the family members usually do all the personal care for them.

Sussman works with the young medical professionals while there to further educate them, and also had professionals come to Houlton to learn about certain equipment here.

His wife, Iva Sussman, participates in helping with the education of the Cambodia children while she is there. She volunteers at the schools and afterschool programs.

The Rotarians enjoyed seeing the pictures of the culture in Cambodia, which was very welcoming to both of them. The Sussmans are able to experience another world as they work to help others.
