HOULTON, Maine — The town’s police department has received money for new equipment from a statewide safety grant.
Houlton Town Manager Marian Anderson said the department has received a $1,373 Safety Enhancement Grant from the Maine Municipal Association Workers Compensation Fund. The money will cover two-thirds of the cost of six new office chairs for the police department.
“If you have been up to the department you know that the old ones are old,” Anderson said. “We are excited to be able to replace the chairs. This is great for the safety of staff and a savings for the taxpayers of Houlton who support our police department.”
According to Anderson, the Ed MacDonald Safety Enhancement Grants and Scholarship Grants provide financial assistance to members of the MMA Workers Compensation Fund to purchase safety equipment or services.
The grant programs are designed to prevent injuries and improve workplace safety of Maine employees. The reduction in employee injuries also benefits the taxpayers by lessening lost hours at work, cost of claims and potential overtime expenses for employees who might have to fill in for injured co-workers.
