Future Road Commissioners? Caribou Department of Public Works employees demonstrated the road equipment the department uses in the city to the first-graders of Hilltop Elementary School teachers. Mary Belanger and Tammy Pooler, who visited the site on Friday, Jan. 20, to learn more about their studies on small machinery force and energy. While there, the youngsters had a “hands-on” opportunity to operate the machinery with assistance from the workers. (Ketch photo)

Poles — Poles are being hauled to extend the telephone line on Washburn Street as far as the Johnson Brothers’ slaughterhouse.

100 Years Ago – Jan. 21, 1920

International Bridge — Aroostook people are interested in the report that the international bridge between Madawaska, Maine, and Edmunston, New Brunswick, will be built this year at an estimated cost of $260,000.

75 Years Ago – Jan. 18, 1945

               Plus Sirois Executive Me. Potato Bag Co.  — Plus A. Sirois has been appointed an executive of the Maine Potato Bag Company of Caribou, Mrs. L.B. Firtel, president, announced this morning. Mr. Sirois will take over his new duties on Monday, Jan. 22, as assistant to the president in the manufacture of burlap and paper bags for the shipment of Maine potatoes.

50 Years Ago – Jan. 21, 1970

Job Well Done — Caribou United Fund officials, headed by President Fred Bennett, are receiving some well-deserved plaudits these days. They not only started their campaign with the highest goal ever, $30,000, they came within an ace of hitting the jackpot.

New Post Office — A new post office opened in New Sweden on Jan. 12 with Hartley Nelson as postmaster. The office business was moved from the Walter Anderson building, where it has been located for the past 55 and a half years.
