BANGOR, Maine — The Houlton cheering squad has once again qualified for the state competition following a solid routine at the regional competition Saturday at the Cross Insurance Center.
In what has become an almost annual tradition, the Shires advanced to the Class C state event, set for Saturday, Feb. 8, at the Augusta Civic Center. The Class C competition begins at 2 p.m. and is combined with the Class B competition.
Sumner High School of East Sullivan took home top honors, tallying 77.9 points and was one of six schools to qualify. Central of Corinth was second with 66.1 points and the other four qualifiers were Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln (65.1), Houlton (64.2), Bucksport (57.5) and Dexter (57).
Foxcroft Academy of Dover-Foxcroft (53.8), Calais (52.8), Orono (50.3) and Mount View of Thorndike (36) rounded out the field.
Members of the Houlton squad include seniors Isabelle Cosby, Lexi Crouse, Paige Ford and Emily Shaw; juniors Emmalyne Drake, Josh Ford, Josie Ford, Morgan Harris, Autumn McNinch, Sidney Peabody and Hannah Foster; sophomores Makenna Cooley, Eden Davis, Ellie Grant and Hailey Hipsely; and freshmen Kenzie Hodgkins, Emily Lambert, Hillary Peabody, Hailey Quint, Madalyn Quirk and Riley Sylvain.
