100 Years Ago – Feb. 18, 1920
New corporation — The Putnam-Ervin Company has been organized at Houlton, to conduct a general real estate business with a capital stock of $60,000, all of which is common stock; nothing paid in; par value, $100; shares subscribed, 600; directors, Lee W. Irvin, (president), Arthur O. Putnam, (treasurer), Fred L. Putnam, Houlton. This cooperation was organized for the purpose of conducting the interests of the Frisbie Block, so called, which the above gentlemen purchased last week.
Accepted position — Fred B. Kidder, who for the past two years has been connected with the firm of Kidder and Shanks, has accepted a position with Almon H. Fogg Co. as a traveling salesman, and has already entered upon his duties.
75 Years Ago – Feb. 15, 1945
Success — The nearby towns of Patten, Smyrna Mills, Oakfield and Bridgewater, with the addition of a few from Houlton, made possible the success of the third blood donor clinic conducted here Sunday by Southern Aroostook Chapter, American Red Cross at the Madigan Hospital. Again the unit form the Canadian Red Cross at Woodstock and its volunteer operators made the clinic possible. There were 101 donors who contributed to this event, which is described as a splendid demonstration of patriotism.
Appointed — B.D. Tingley has been appointed by Governor Hildreth as a State Humane Agent. Herbert Kinney, who has been serving in that capacity, will also be retained.
50 Years Ago – Feb. 18, 1970
Promoted — Aubrey Grant Jr., an employee of the First National Bank of Houlton since 1949, has been elected an officer of the bank with the title of assistant cashier. The election came during a meeting of the board of directors and was announced this week by James M. Pierce, president of the bank.
Honored at tea — Miss Ann Martin was honored by the Lydia Putnam Chapter, DAR, Monday afternoon at a tea at Parkview Terrace. Miss Martin is the chapter Good Citizen candidate. Another candidate, Miss Rebecca Speed, was unable to be present due to illness. Mrs. Isabelle R. Hess, hostess and program chairman; Mrs. Harriett Cates, regent; Miss Martin; and her mother, Mrs. Alton Martin were all present. Miss Marion Fairley presided at the tea table.
25 Years Ago – Feb. 15, 1995
Dinosaurs — Grade two students at SAD 70 Elementary School presented a concert, “Dinosaurs, Dinosaurs, Dinosaurs” in the elementary gym. The concert combined music and movement and was under the direction of Barbara Hogan and Dawn Bossie.
Statues presented — Louisiana Pacific employees recently received Boy and Boot pewter replica statues. Company employees recently completed a payroll deduction pledge for the Boy and the Boot endowment fund. Presenting the statues were Paula Gendron, program director, and Peg Hammond, executive director of the Houlton Regional Health Services Foundation, which benefits from the program. LP employees receiving the statues were Barry Robinson, Jack Porter and Steve Douglas, while plant manager Gerry Nason helped with the presentation.
