FORT FAIRFIELD – Officials are calling the opening of a furniture store in the heart of the community a much-needed shot in the town’s economic arm.

“This is wonderful. Redeveloping retail in the community will help redevelop the downtown,” said Town Manager Dan Foster, referring to the recent opening of Cozy Corner II as a furniture store.
The retailer, according to Foster, will attract new customers to Main Street. Located in Village Square, Cozy Corner II Furniture Annex features a wide selection of furniture, including Italian leather pieces, and the accessories to match.
“This store will attract more people to downtown. Furniture is something people will drive to shop for. It makes sense to do something like this,” said Foster.
Foster said a business’s success is based on “finding the right niche and getting the word out,” both elements Cozy Corner II is living up to. Attractive displays are also important.
“They’ve done a really nice job of setting up,” said Foster, noting the various displays, including living room arrangements, office and bedroom motifs.
Formerly owned by Gene and Linda Senechal, Cozy Corner II changed hands this winter, with Jerry Tanner and Terry Greenier taking over the business and converting it to feature fine furniture at affordable prices.
“The store offers a different choice in town. I think it’s a good fit for the people. No one else has Italian leather,” said Greenier.
“We sold some at our Presque Isle store but nothing like this. These are quality pieces,” said Senechal, who indicated he has several items in his own home.
Greenier also owns several pieces. Owning similar furniture, the two men can speak from experience when talking about such products.
“I have several pieces at home and find them quite comfortable,” said Greenier, pointing out several pieces of leather furniture.
With most people watching their budget these days, pricing was another important consideration.
“We’re bringing prices down to show that you can get quality at an affordable price,” said Greenier. “We keep the markup to a minimum. That makes a substantial difference in what we charge for each piece.”
Affordability is the goal, according to Gene Senechal, the store manager.
“We won’t be undersold. We’re here to sell furniture. Once we clear out more across the hall, we’ll have pieces on display in both locations,” said Senechal.
The additional space will allow the business to set up furniture in displays according to room types, be it a kitchen, bedroom, living room or office space. Whether you’re looking for a couch or recliner to enjoy a sporting event on television, or need to set up an office or kitchen, Cozy Corner II has something for just about every décor.
Greenier indicated catalog sales are also an option. If a customer doesn’t find what they’re looking for on the premises, catalogs are available to browse, with prompt delivery offered.
“Merchandise can be treated with Scotchguard, if that’s something a customer wants,” said Senechal.
    Items are also warranteed.
“Turnaround is quick on catalog orders. We also offer delivery throughout Aroostook County. We’re here to serve our customers and, hopefully, make friends at the same time,” said Greenier. “The catalog company we deal with gets merchandise to us quickly.”
Trade-ins are being considered as an option for future expansion.
“We may help folks solve the problem of what to do with the furniture they’re replacing by offering to take trade-ins, but that’s still an idea for the future, as space becomes available. If we go that route, we may have used furniture as well,” said Greenier.
The Main Street store will have a staff of three full-time and two part-time employees. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
“We also offer hours by appointment, for folks unable to make it here for our regular hours,” said Senechal.
“For many people who have to work days, it’s difficult to shop. We want to make it as convenient for our customers as possible,” said Greenier.
“This is a great addition to our downtown,” said Foster. “I think the store will do well.”
