100 Years Ago – Feb. 25, 1920

     Recently returned M.B. Berman, who recently returned from New York where he purchased new goods, will have some interesting things to say through these columns about the wonderful bargains he secured.

     Convention Wm. O. Buzzell returned home last week from New York, where he attended a convention of Furniture Manufacturers.

75 Years Ago – Feb. 22, 1945

     Silver wedding anniversary Twenty-four friends of Mr. and Mrs. Dana Nickerson surprised them at their home Sunday evening when they gathered in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Nickerson’s twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. A picnic supper was served by their friends and a sum of money in silver presented to the guests of honor, following which a social evening was enjoyed.

50 Years Ago – Feb. 25, 1970

     Winners at Grants Several special items were offered by Grants during their Washinton’s Birthday Dividend Sale. Among those receiving these items were: Mrs. Viona MacArthur of Island Falls, who was presented with a television set by David Harris; Mrs. John Steeves of Houlton received a new television set; Mona W. Johnston of Houlton received a new recliner chair.

     Rotary’s anniversary banquet More than 200 persons, including 21 past presidents of the club, attended the 50th anniversary banquet of the Houlton Rotary Club in the main ballroom of the Northland Hotel. The group also included many former members of the Houlton club, representatives of seven of the other clubs that comprise Rotary District 781, and wives. John Winslow of Woodstock, Governor of District 781, presented the Houlton club with a golden anniversary plaque on behalf of Rotary International, and the East Florenceville, N.B., club presented the Houlton Rotarians with a New Brunswick flag.

25 Years Ago – Feb. 22, 1995

    Winners Bethany Marsh took first place honors in Katahdin Junior High’s recent geography bee, while Ryan Robinson was the runner-up. Marsh will now take a written test to advance to the state bee on April 7. The top 100 scorers will participate in the event. Other participants included Brian Stevens, Anthony Huntley, Tarren Violette, Derek Bouchard, Jamie McAvoy, Dustin Morgan and Felecia Bowen.

    Auxiliary gives check — Auxiliary President Mary E. Foss and treasurer Betty Ann Childers presented a $5,000 check to Bradley Bean, administrator of Houlton Regional Hospital, towards a pledge by the Auxiliary of $75,000 for new monitoring equipment in the new wing.
