Winter Hayride - - Members of the Sportsmen’s Inc. hosted a chicken stew meal and horse drawn hayrides as part of the Caribou Winter Carnival activities on Sunday, Feb. 26 at their Axel Siding Lodge. 115 Years Ago – March 8,  1905

High School — Attendance at the Caribou High School is the largest ever in its history.

Trip — Mr. and Mrs. Roy Brown started Monday on a trip to Bangor and Boston. Mr. Brown will visit the markets to select his spring and summer stock of dry goods.

100 Years Ago – March 11, 1920

Snow Plow — The big snow plow of the Bangor & Aroostook Railroad jumped the track and plowed across the platform and crashed two feet into the telegraph office of the Derby Station Friday. Operator Buck looked up from his instrument panel just in time to see the plow coming toward the station. He called out to two other agents and they all jumped to safety. The plow ripped two big holes in the station and smashed up the office furnishings and equipment.

75 Years Ago – March 8, 1945

Give One Day — The Nat’l Red Cross is trying to raise $2 billion this year. The Caribou chapter, including eight towns, is trying to raise $10,800. Last year the Caribou area went 148 percent over its quota. Let’s do it again this year.

Limestone News — Powers Peterson arrived here last Wednesday night with the new town truck and snowplow purchased in Ohio.

50 Years Ago -March 11, 1970

Eleven Troops observe Nat’l Girl Scout Week — Nat’l Girl Scout Week is being observed by the 11 Troops in Caribou March 8-14, according to Mrs. Albert Akeley. Girl Scout Week’s theme is “Awareness Action” and the days of the week are called the “Seven Days of Service.” The Girl Scouts’ birthday is observed on March 12. The first meeting was held on that date in 1912.

25 Years Ago – March 8, 1995

Troop leaders will observe 83rd year of Girl Scouting — Girl Scouts in the Caribou area will observe the 83rd anniversary of Girl Scouting during National Girl Scouting Week, March 12-19, and will host a regional cultural event in Caribou on April 29.

Borderview adds 12 beds — Borderview Manor in Van Buren is expanding to provide more diversified care for the elderly for the second time in as many years. March marked the official opening of a new 12-bed addition to the nursing home.
