FORT FAIRFIELD, Maine — Aroostook Waste Solutions announced March 24 that they would initiate additional protective measures, including requiring landfill customers to remain in their vehicles when conducting transactions at the sites.
The decision is in accordance with Gov. Janet Mills’ March 24 executive order directing businesses to temporarily discontinue direct public contact, and was also issued in order to protect the health and safety of employees and the general public, said Mark Draper, solid waste director.
“Waste disposal is an essential public service and AWS is making every effort to remain open so the public may dispose of waste. The public health ramifications of not doing so could be significant,” Draper said. “To that end, we must make every effort to protect our employees so that we are able to continue to provide those services.”
The following measures are effective immediately at the Tri-Community Landfill in Fort Fairfield and at the Presque Isle Landfill.
The public is restricted from entering any AWS buildings; including the scale houses, offices, shops, or recycling center. AWS ask that customers remain in their vehicles when interacting with scale house staff.
AWS will not accept any waste materials for which a fee would be charged and for which the generator does not have a charge account. These items would include, but not be limited to, demolition debris, tires, appliances, universal waste items such as televisions, computer monitors and lamps.
