PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Presque Isle Loop bus will temporarily discontinue its service beginning April 1.
The Aroostook Regional Transportation System announced Friday that the Presque Isle Loop was suspending operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic and low ridership.
A post on the Presque Isle Loop Facebook page said that service would be suspended “as of April 1.” Aroostook Regional Transportation System said the suspension was necessary to allow for the “safety of all” in the wake of coronavirus concerns.
Aroostook Regional Transportation System Executive Director David Dionne was not immediately available for comment.
The announcement came 10 days after the system said it would continue to keep the Loop operating. At the time, it said it was necessary to keep the service running because it gave riders a way to attend doctor’s appointments and shop for food and supplies.
The Presque Isle Loop began service on Oct. 15, 2019, stopping at 16 locations around Presque Isle, including both colleges, the Sargent Family Community Center, Northern Light A.R. Gould Hospital and Walmart.
Aroostook Regional Transportation did not specify how long it would suspend Loop operations.
