Houlton Rotarians meet via teleconference

HOULTON, Maine — On Monday, March 30, the Houlton Rotary Club held its first virtual meeting using the website Zoom, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The virtual meeting was well attended and it was nice for everyone to interact after having not met the previous two weeks.

Amanda Crane from Southern Aroostook Minor Hockey League (SAMHA) presented to the club about the hockey program and also gave the group information on floor and street hockey. SAMHA was awarded funds by Rotary this year to help purchase equipment for this.

SAMHA is partnering with the Houlton Recreation Center to offer Youth Street Hockey this summer. It will be a six-week program offered through the Just for Kids Program. Participants will be required to bring their own sneakers and if they own a helmet with a cage and hockey gloves they can bring those; however, if those that don’t have them, the program will provide them.

There will be two age groups consisting of ages seven through 10 and another of ages 11 through 14. Registration will be required to participate.

“This program is designed to help existing ice hockey players maintain the skills they have learned during the winter ice hockey season, as well as expose new players to the sport of hockey,” Crane said. “Hockey is about respect, dedication, discipline, and love for the game and your team. The coaches that we have are dedicated to teaching these children the love of the game. We want to reach more children and offer this sport and share the love of hockey.”

For more information on this program you can contact the Houlton Rec Center at 207-532-1310 or reach them through Facebook. For more information on ice hockey or floor and street hockey, you can reach out to SAMHA Hockey Group on Facebook or visit samhahockey.org.
