CARIBOU, Maine — Contractors with Soderberg Construction began demolishing a house at 11 Glenn Street on Wednesday. The 0.6 acre lot will be used for snow removal and overflow parking for the new Caribou Community School.
Voters on Nov. 5 approved a bond issue allowing RSU 39 — which include Caribou and Stockholm schools — to spend up to $175,000 for the purchase of this land. This money covers purchasing the lot from its former owner, conducting asbestos abatement, demolishing the existing property and then creating the new lot.
The school administration hopes to save money with the lot, as the ability to move snow onto this area during the winter months will prevent them from needing to hire a contractor to physically haul off excess snow.
When it’s not being used to handle the extra snow, school officials will be able to use the lot for overflow parking during large events. And while the current COVID-19 pandemic has put life on hold for many in Maine, the new school project is still underway and scheduled to open in mid-September.
