CARIBOU, Maine — Twenty-eight firefighters from Caribou, Limestone and Presque Isle fire departments fought a fire at 4 Liberty St. in Caribou Saturday night that caused damage estimated at $175,000.

Caribou Fire and Ambulance Capt. Scott Jackson said the fire was called in at 5:30 p.m., and at first, the caller reported that someone was inside the building.

“The crew went into the building and did an interior search,” he said. “After the owner was found, they let the guys know that nobody was in there, which made it much easier on the crew.”

The nearly 30 person crew of firefighters fought the flames for four hours and 20 minutes, Jackson said, and encountered some unique challenges due to the building having undergone several renovations.

“The building had two roofs,” he said. “The original roof was under the new roof, which made it hard on the guys. They had to cut through two roofs, which is something that happens once in a while, but not very often.”

Jackson said the estimated loss for the building was $100,000, with destroyed contents valued at $75,000.

No injuries resulted from the fire, and the cause was still under investigation on April 20. Jackson did not know if the building or its contents were insured.
