The Central Aroostook Humane Society would like to update the public about some changes in our operations that have been implemented regarding coronavirus and COVID-19.
Our faithful employees are providing care every day for the animals housed at the shelter. We realize that there are many folks who enjoy a visit to socialize the cats or walk the dogs, but for now casual visits to the shelter are restricted. Please be patient as this situation will works itself out eventually.
Animals are still very much available for adoption, but by appointment only. We have continued to post photos and videos of available animals on the shelter Facebook page. If interested, please message the shelter and we will forward you an adoption application. After review, an appointment can be set up. We have been happy to report that adoptions have continued, even through these stressful times.
If the need to surrender your pet is not urgent, then we ask that you wait to bring your animal in. This will ensure room for emergency cases. Again, this is only temporary. The shelter is always available to help.
We are always thankful for your thoughtful generosity. Donations of pet food are encouraged. Both cat and dog food, canned and dry in sealed/unopened packages, are very much needed for our animals. However, donations of supplies (blankets, toys and so forth) cannot be accepted at this time.
It appears that dogs and cats are not readily infected with this virus, and there seems to be little to no evidence that they become ill. However, if a family member is sick with COVID-19, you should restrict contact with pets and other animals, just as you would restrict contact with other people.
When possible, have another member of the household take care of feeding and otherwise caring for any animals, including pets.
If you have a service animal or you must care for your animals, including pets, wear a cloth face mask. Don’t pet the animal, don’t share food, don’t kiss or hug them — and wash your hands before and after any contact with your pet or service animal.
You should not share dishes, drinking glasses, cups, eating utensils, towels or bedding with other people or pets in your home.
