From the Bunkers – Week of May 18, 2020

HOULTON, Maine — Hallelujah, spring has finally sprung. Our golf course is now open to the public for play. Last Friday, May 8, was the day and fairways and roughs were mowed, tees were groomed and set up, and now with the help of Mother Nature and a little heat I can turn my efforts to the greens.

Looks like good weather ahead.

Golf this year will be different under the new normal. Golf carts are available, although restricted to one rider per cart. They will be sanitized after each use. You should call ahead for tee times as we have to space the pairings out more. Flagsticks are to remain in the hole. Bring a damp towel to clean your golf balls and get bottled water in the clubhouse before you go out. Entry to the clubhouse will be by way of the deck door. One group at a time. And don’t forget to practice social distancing. Also, the driving range is closed until further notice.

Now would be a great time to submit your application with fees for the 2020 season. The application can be downloaded from our website at www.houltongolf.com. Joining now will give you more time to enjoy golf. And if you have not been able to join in the last two years (2018 or 2019), do we have a deal for you! Full memberships are available at half the 2020 rates!

Men’s Twilight League signups are in progress. Similar to past years, there will be two-man teams with 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. flights on Mondays.

The Ladies Association is still in discussions for Tuesday play.

Golf for Life will be starting in early June. This is a program for first-time players. You will receive five, one-hour group lessons from accredited Instructor Dave Grant. Clubs will be available for use during the lessons. This is a great opportunity to see if golf is for you at no cost. After being cooped up this spring, now is the time to get out and enjoy the fresh air. You just might discover a new fun way to exercise that you can use for the rest of your life. Call Dave at 538-8333 if you have questions or want to register.

Junior Golf clinics will begin toward the end of June.

The Lakeside Restaurant was open for take out service this last weekend. Chef Aaron Paul has the kitchen up and running and will be open for dine-in service this week. He has an exciting opening menu, and is looking ahead to a fantastic season. Call 207-805-5250 for reservations.

As we approach this year of change, we will endeavor to give you the best experience we can. With the new guidelines, patience will be the key word. If you have any questions about how we are going to proceed, or to sign up for any of the events, please call the clubhouse at 532-2662. And hope to see you on the course this week.
