Fall tryout schedule set for SAD 1 athletics

Tryout dates have been set for those interested in trying out for a sports team at Presque Isle High School this fall.

Girls’ soccer tryouts will take place Tuesday and Wednesday, July 30 and 31, at the Johnson Athletic Complex beginning at 4 p.m. Boys’ tryouts are set for those same days at 6 p.m.
Cross country begins Aug. 12 at 5 p.m., golf Aug. 19 at 3:15 p.m. and fall cheering Aug. 19 at 6 p.m.

Color Presque Isle 5K

The Color Presque Isle 5K Road Race is scheduled for Aug. 24.
The registration fee is $25 if done on Aug. 1 or before. After Aug. 1, the fee will be $30. The first 200 to register will receive a T-shirt.

All proceeds from the race will benefit the Northern Maine Center for the Cultural Arts.

Golf tourney at AVCC benefits hall of fame

The third annual Maine Basketball Hall of Fame Golf Scramble will take place Friday, Aug. 2 at Aroostook Valley Country Club in Fort Fairfield. This will be a four-person Oldsmobile scramble with an 11 a.m. shotgun start. Registration will be from 10-10:45 a.m. The field is limited to the first 40 paid teams. Entry fee is $60 per person and includes a steak or chicken BBQ.
Over $4,000 in prizes will be awarded to the top two gross teams and top eight net teams. In addition, golfers will have a chance to win two hole-in-one prizes, including a 2013 Ford Focus on hole No. 15 and a $10,000 cash prize for a hole-in-one on hole No. 4.
Closest to the pin and a longest drive will also be held. An auction will also be part of the event.
The proceeds of this tournament will go to the Maine Basketball Hall of Fame in support of the hall that will be located in a wing of the Cross Insurance Cener in Bangor, which is now under construction and will be the future site of the Eastern Maine Basketball Tournament.

Volleyball camp

The University of Maine at Presque Isle volleyball program will offer a summer skills camp the week of July 22-26. The camp is open to girls entering sixth through 12th grades and takes place at Wieden Hall on the UMPI campus.
Owl head volleyball coach Mark Kornachuk will direct the camp. Kornachuk is a graduate of the University of Tennessee and has 25 years of volleyball experience.
The clinic will be held daily from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. and the cost is $50, which includes a camp T-shirt. Team discounts are available. For more information, contact Kornachuk at Mark.kornachuk@gmail.com or 999-9836.
