PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Work has begun on the extension of Presque Isle’s Bike Path in the Riverside Park area.
The new one-mile extension loop to the paved and lit bike and walking trail will be known as Mary’s Mile, in honor of its prime benefactor, Mary Akeley Smith.
As part of the project, there will be some new green space added by the courthouse and public market pavilion, as well as new benches and picnic tables.
The budget for the project is just over $1 million, reported city resource development and public information officer Kimberly Smith. All of the funding came from private sources: a small AARP Community Challenge grant and the remainder of the funding from Smith.
City officials said the entire project will take approximately 120 days from start to completion.
