100 Years Ago – July 7, 1920
New prices — Beginning July 5 the motion picture houses advanced their admission prices, being the last line of business throughout the country to raise their prices to meet the advancing costs of everything that goes into the making of a Motion picture.
However, the youngsters will gain by the advance as the tickets for children under 12 will be 10 cents while the grown ups will need to dig down for 20 cents.
Attending convention — Alexander Munro who has been in Atlantic City attending the National Convention of Rotary Clubs returned home Thursday evening.
75 Years Ago – July 5, 1945
40 years — Establishing a record for consecutive years of employment never before equaled since the establishment of a post office in Houlton, Burns McIntyre rounded out 40 years of service in the employ of the United States Post Office Department here. He began his long career with the government July 1, 1905 when he started as a clerk when the late Frank M. Hume was postmaster. He reached the retirement age several years ago but at the time he elected to continue active work rather than quit.
Milk bar to open — The transformation of the former Palmer’s Kandy Kitchen in The Milk Bar, while not wholly completed, has progressed far enough so that Alan Clark of Houlton Farms Dairy announces that it will open for business Saturday. The interior of the store has been completely redone from wall to wall and floor to ceiling. The new establishment is owned by the Houlton Farms Dairy and will be operated under the management of Donald Taylor.
50 Years Ago – July 8, 1970
New owners — Mickey and Rochelle Boulier have made many changes at the former Gentle’s Diner on the Bangor Road since they took over the management. Their H & R Diner and Dairy Bar, as the business is now known, features complete home cooked meals and home made ice cream.
Pie eating contest — Eighty-three youngsters took part in the pei eating contest held at Community Park by the Parks and Recreation Department. The contest, won by Billy Masters, was a feature of the Potato Feast Day activities at the park.
25 Years Ago – July 5, 1995
Proceeds donated — Debbie Woodbury, head of WalMart’s community involvement program, presented a $200 check to Sharon Wood and Mary Armour of the Southern Aroostook chapter of the Aroostook County Agency to Prevent Child Abuse recently. The funds were from a bake sale and sales from a snowblower the store held and a matching donation was also provided an additional match.
Driver of the year — John Klauzenberg of Houlton has been named McCain Transport Inc.1994 Driver of the Year. There to take part in presenting the award was; McCain Transport president Brent Cronkite; Hampton Jackson, operating and recruiting supervisor; Klauzenberg, and Peter Green, operating and marketing manager.
