Hello friends. Here we are near the end of July. Another summer month goes by. We are still in search of a good soaking rain. The golf course is looking good. Although the grass is growing, our grounds crew is keeping pace. The fairways are green and most of the greens are getting back to the shape we are used to.
As we roll into the heat of summer, our calendar gets busy. Coming Aug. 8-9 is The County Open. This 31st annual tournament benefits the Houlton Health Services Foundation. Saturday we will host an 18-hole stroke play tournament. Handicaps will be used to place golfers in several flights. This has always been one of the great events for us and it serves an excellent cause. The field is limited to 72 players to keep pace of play up, so get your application in soon.
Sunday will be a four person scramble, played at VaJoWa Golf Club in Island Falls. Registration begins at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. A very popular tournament format, the tee sheet will fill up fast. For more info or to sign up, you can call Lori Weston at 521-2147 soon. It’s only two weeks away.
The Club Championship/Presidents Cup is scheduled for Aug. 15-16. This tournament is open to all members. It is one of the perks of being a member of Houlton Golf Club. Plan on playing and meeting other members that you might not have interacted with. Signup sheets will be on the bulletin board in the Great Room. Over Labor Day weekend, we will host the Babe Caron Memorial Tournament. It is Saturday and Sunday with two person teams. Half handicap on Saturday and full handicap on Sunday. We are looking for 30-32 teams.
The Lakeside Restaurant is open and serving fine meals five days a week. Open from 4-8:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Sunday for brunch. Chef Aaron is also supplying great grab and go sandwiches and wraps for a quick snack for lunch on the course. Cal them at 850-5250 for dinner reservations.
Men’s Twilight League has come down to just three more weeks until we start the playoffs. Although the leaders have opened a small gap, there are plenty of teams fighting for second and third place. The Ladies Association will be playing Bingo,Bango, Bongo on Tuesday. Signup sheet is on the board, so call the proshop to put your name on the list and then come out Tuesday and meet some new golfers to play with.
With the County Open coming in a couple weeks, we are going to have a volunteer day on Saturday, Aug. 1 from 8 a.m. to noon. We will be cleaning up the pine grove on holes 2 and 9. If we have time, and enough people, we will head over to the grove on the left of hole six. So bring your gloves and weed wackers and join the crowd. As we proved earlier, many hands make quick work of the chores. You do not have to commit to the whole four hours, any help is appreciated. Hope to see you there.
