50TH REUNION — The Class of 1920 of Presque Isle High School held a class reunion July 15 at the Northeastland Hotel with 22  members and 10 guests present. Marjorie Turner introduced Edna Cook who called the class roll-members responded by giving resumes of their lives since 1920. A telephone call was received from Esther White Owen in Oklahoma and wires were received from C. Hubert Croper and Mrs. Isodore Stevens Martin. 75 Years Ago –  Aug.  9, 1945

Pvt. Bellefleur at the PI Army Air Field  — Pvt. Stanley J. Bellefleur, Limestone, arrived at the Presque Isle Army Air Field after a trans-Atlantic flight in an Air Transport Command C-54 Skymaster plane of the North Atlantic Division’s “Snowball” fleet.

A veteran of three years foreign duty, Bellefleur served as a M-4 Tractor driver with the Field Artillery in the European Theater of Operations. The 26-year-old Limestone soldier had accumulated 114 points toward an Army discharge and had been awarded the Good Conduct Medal for a D-Day invasion. There was a family reunion at the main gate, Air Base.

Approved — City Manager Trafton stated that he received notification that the Maine Liquor Commission had granted a hard liquor license to the Hayward-Frazier Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars. At a hearing held in spring, the City Council turned down the application of the Post at a hearing held in the Municipal building.

50 Years Ago –  Aug. 12, 1970

Sweetser granted study leave — Thomas C. Sweetser, Extension agent in Central Aroostook County, was granted a nine months leave for study by the University of Maine, Cooperative Extension Service. He had 10 1/2 years of service with the University of Maine Cooperative Extension Service, and had been assigned to the Aroostook County area with an office in Presque Isle for the previous 6½ years, since Jan. 1, 1964. He formerly served in Extension Service positions in Washington and Kennebec counties in the early 1950s. Sweetser graduated from North Yarmouth Academy in 1944 and the University of Maine with a BS degree in agronomy in 1950.

Ashland and Fort Kent split — The Ashland All-Star softball team traveled to Fort Kent and managed to divide a double header with that town. Ashland won the first game 15-7 and dropped the nightcap 6-3. Billy Leach, Don Clayton and Phil Bozenhard had triples in the first game while Len McHatten had three hits. Leroy Marquis had three safeties for the losers. Ray Scribner pitched both games for Ashland. Ashland’s record stood at 7-3 in non-league Competition.

25 Years Ago –  Aug. 9, 1995

Tourne Champs — Winners of the third annual Easton Field Day Golf Tournament, held at West Ridge Road Golf Course, were the team of Barry Richardson, Gloria Richardson and Mark Hewitt. The second-place team was the threesome of Mike Allen, Harry Tovani and Les Tovani, while placing third were Gerry Flewelling, Clinton Adams and Al Leach.

Ribbon cutting — Dick’s Auto Sales celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The car dealer relocated to Industrial Street after many years in the Mapleton area. 

Grand opening — Newberry’s Values for Less celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The new store, located on North Street, offered a complete line of products at discount prices.

Check presentation — The J.M. Huber Corp. of Easton donated $500 to the Aroostook County Board of Realtors who have made a commitment to raise funds for the Battered Women’s Project serving Aroostook County. Attending the presentation were Chairwoman Melanie Stewart, Carol Bell, Terry Condon and Tammy Fletcher of Huber, and Sharon Hedrick of the Battered Women’s Project.
