Interstate paving begins between Medway and Sherman

SHERMAN, Maine — Drivers heading northbound overnight on I-95 between Medway and Sherman can expect to see lane closures and pavement work, as part of a new operation by the Maine Department of Transportation.

MaineDOT announced that it will begin a new paving project along the interstate in that area, which takes up around 22 miles of road. The project began on Monday and is expected to last until Oct. 7, when it will be temporarily suspended for the winter months. The project will resume again in May, with an estimated completion date of July 7, 2021.

Crews will be paving segments of the northbound side of I-95, including some highway bridges and ramps, between the Medway and Sherman areas of Penobscot and Aroostook counties.

As part of the project, MaineDOT will also pave and make other improvements to the Visitor Information Center in Medway and the Katahdin Scenic Overlook in T1 R6. The area around the Sherman interchange will be cleared, in order to increase visibility and to reduce the number of deer strikes.

The contract for the paving was given to Northeast Paving of Hampden. The total amount for the contracted work will exceed more than $9 million.
