FORT FAIRFIELD, Maine — Approximately 40 acres of land in Fort Fairfield were left burnt after a grain fire in Fort Fairfield on Wednesday that the Maine Forest Rangers said was caused by an equipment fire.
At around 2:10 p.m., the Fort Fairfield Fire Department received a report of a grain fire near the intersection of Limestone Road and Flannery Road. Upon arriving at the scene, firefighters found that about half an acre of land was on fire.
Firefighters from the town fought the fire with help from the Maine State Forest Rangers, Caribou Fire Department, Limestone Fire Department and Easton Fire Department, eventually extinguishing the flames. Fort Fairfield Police and the Maine State Police also assisted in the effort.
There were no injuries, and no structures or equipment was damaged otherwise. A burning smell was still strong at the scene after crews had left — a large field of land burnt.
Fort Fairfield Fire said the fire was still under investigation but not being treated as suspicious.
The Aroostook County Emergency Management Agency asked residents to avoid the vicinity of the fire at around 3 p.m. It said authorities were having difficulty moving trucks to the location because of several onlookers.
