100 Years Ago – Sept. 29, 1920
Returned to Houlton — Cu Carroll, who for the past year has been employed in the Scates Drug Store at Caribou, has returned to Houlton and entered the employ of Leighton & Feeley.
Moved to New York City — Messrs. Theo. J. Fox and Howard A. Fox left Monday for New York City where they will locate. The Messrs Fox have been in business here for 35 years and Mr. T. J. Fox, the senior partner, has been closely identified in the various activities of the town during his long residence here, and the many friends of the boys will regret their removal from town.
75 Years Ago – Sept. 27, 1945
Attends meeting — Bertram Trainer has returned from New York City where he attended a salesmen’s meeting of the Bay State Milling Co.
Restaurant sold — The Elsie Hannigan restaurant on Bangor street was sold last week through the J. R. Harvey Co. to Roy D. Adams.
50 Years Ago – Sept. 30, 1970
Face lifting coming — Day’s Jewelry Store announced this week that the top floor of the former Newberry building will be removed and that the Day’s store will be extended into that building. Work on the rebuilding program is expected to be started shortly.
To build a new school — General Supply Corporation of Limestone has been awarded the general construction contract for the new elementary school for the School Administrative District 70 in the amount of $712,590, the lowest bid of several submitted. Construction is expected to start immediately for the district school servicing the towns of Hodgdon, Amity, Cary and Haynesville.
25 Years Ago – Sept. 27, 1995
Grand prize winner — Mary Bennett of Houlton was the winner of a 25-inch color TV as the grand prize in Key Bank’s ‘Customer Appreciation Days.’ Assisting in the presentation was Ron McCardle, the investment officer for Key Investments, and Shirley Reardon, branch manager.
Hug a bear donations — Students from Eileen’s DayCare recently donated stuffed bears to the Hug-A-Bear promotion, sponsored by WLBZ-TV in Bangor and Shop ‘n Save supermarkets. Assisting in the donations were students Cierra Willette, Michael McLean, Scott Cham, Eric Cone,Megan Gresham, Raymond Ivey, Tyler Chong, Michael Jewel, Amanda Graham, Julie Ivey. Shop ‘n Save Produce Manager Baxter Oliver and Skip Keegan, assistant manager of the Houlton Shop ‘n Save. The bears are used by law enforcement officials to give comfort to children.
