100 Years Ago – Sept. 30, 1920
Airline — The Bangor Commercial is responsible for a statement of interest to residents in this section of the state, to the effect that Worth B. Combs, formerly of Bangor, has announced plans for regular passenger flying to Presque Isle, Caribou and Fort Kent from Bangor.
75 Years Ago – Sept. 27, 1945
New residential area in Caribou — Another residential section, with turnpiked streets, and modern architecture, is expected to spring up here in Caribou early next summer when many prospective homeowners will start construction on “Pioneer Acres,” the new area opened up by the S.W.. Collins Company, north of Collins Street.
50 Years Ago – Sept. 30, 1970
200 years of freedom — American newspapers have enjoyed over 200 years of freedom. In recognition of this National Newspaper Week will be observed from Oct. 4 – Oct. 10.
No digging today — The digger stood idle, the truck was stationary and water lay in the rows on a Lombard Road farm Monday morning after a disappointing week for farmers anxious to get the crop in. Rain discouraged harvesting for most of those with low land throughout the first week of harvest. The weather bureau recorded a record low of 37 degrees Tuesday morning, a light frost was found in lowland fields.
25 Years Ago – Sept. 27, 1995
Stockholm firefighters help control forest fires — The Stockholm Volunteer Fire Department, consisting of 12 members, of whom two are state licensed emergency medical technicians (EMTs), has been instrumental in helping to quell seven forest fires during this unusually dry summer.
Health and Education Council playground — The New Sweden Health and Education Council met Wednesday evening, they voted to spend $2,500 on phase 1 of their playground equipment project. This will go toward the purchase of individual pieces to be installed this fall.
