CARIBOU, Maine — The Caribou Vikings golf team kicked off the fist high school competition since COVID-19 halted all sports during volleyball season this past March.
The Vikings hosted Presque Isle and Houlton on the links, and came away with wins over both squads Friday, Sept. 18 at the Caribou Country Club. In typically difficult, windy and cold conditions the Vikings were led by low scorers Brevin Barnes (44), Cory Herbert (46), Carter Quist (48), and Alex Picard (49) for a team score of 187.
Presque Isle totaled 202 and Houlton scored 203. Match medalists were Barnes of Caribou and Collin Moody of Houlton who both carded a 44.
In Penobscot Valley Conference high school golf, teams typically have nine players, seven of whom are designated the starters. The lowest four scores of the starting seven determine the team score. Other players scoring for Caribou were Sawyer Deprey (50), Miles Collier (52), Lars Spooner (51), PJ Thornton (57), and Keegan Bell (58).
On Tuesday, Sept. 22, the Vikings traveled to Houlton to take on the Shires, Wildcats and Hodgdon Hawks and were once again victorious.
The Vikings were led by low scorers Barnes (46), Herbert (46), Collier (47), and Quist and Spooner both with a 48, for a team score of 187. Houlton scored a 190, Presque Isle scored 199 and Hodgdon totaled 243.
Match Medalist was Moody of Houlton who carded a 34.
Other players scoring for Caribou were Bell (53), Deprey (54), Jeremiah Holmes (59), and Nick Staples (66).
