PRESQUE ISLE — The Wildcat varsity golf team is ready to kick off another season of play in the Penobscot Valley Conference.
Under new head coach Daren Hunter, this squad is full of veteran leadership and has plenty of experience, including 10 players returning from last year.
Seniors this year are Carter LaPointe, Josh Gordon, Mikey Michaud, Liam Hughes, Karson Eaton, Bradley Shields, Nick Crouse and Michael Boone. Junior Jenna Hallett, sophomore Gannon Therrien, and freshmen John Saucier and Hunter Flynn round out the roster.
Hunter said one of his team’s strengths is the fact that there are five or six players playing within a few strokes of each other.
“One of the major benefits of this is that all the pressure isn’t riding on one person to put down a low score,” he said. “They all have each other’s back and if someone is struggling, someone else on the team will be there to back them up with a low score.”
The team finished last season off strong, qualifying for the state team tournament, with Hallett, Boone and Gordon all qualifying for the individual state championship.
Hallett is coming off a win in the Maine Junior Golf Championship earlier this month and hopes to carry the momentum into this season.
