PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — As part of the year-long celebration of Presque Isle Historical Society’s 50th anniversary this year, Wintergreen Arts Center will feature an exhibit of historic photos of Presque Isle during the month of September.
In addition, visitors will find some new takes on some old topics with images by local photographers looking at historic items in a different way. The event will include a reception on Friday, Sept. 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. for the monthly First Friday Art Walk.
Images on display will include black and white historic images, tintypes and glass negatives, as well as more modern color photographs and those using special artistic effects. Also on display will be the Society’s antique hair wreath — a common practice from the mid to late 1800s to memorialize a lost loved one and made from human hair which has been woven or crocheted over a wire frame and embellished by beads.
Kim Smith, spokesperson for the Society, said, “I have had the opportunity to visit many museums around the country and in Canada and have seen several hair wreaths. I can honestly say that our Society’s hair wreath is one of the most intricate and beautifully-crafted pieces I have seen.”
Some of Presque Isle’s banner events and unique occurrences have been captured in photographs and will be on display. Members of the Society’s Board of Directors will be on hand to answer questions about the photographs.
