After The Bell

Harvest programming has been sent home with students of the Fort Street Elementary School. If your child did not get a booklet, please let Jamie know by calling 694-1320. Activities are planned during the upcoming weeks of harvest break.
This week After The Bell is preparing for the upcoming Ready, Set, Go youth triathlon. On Friday night, Sept 6, tri-athletes, their families and their supporters are invited to the Tri Carb Night Dinner. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. at Fort Street. Join us as we recognize the hard work they have put into training and cheer them on as they prepare for the big event by making posters.
On Sunday, Sept 8, the Ready, Set, Go youth triathlon will take place at UMPI at 1 p.m. There will be 27 kids from Mars Hill competing as they run, swim and bike to the finish line.
After The Bell and All Stars are sponsoring a fundraiser for the Scott family. It’s simple: drop your kids off at the gym on Friday, Sept 13, from 5:30-8:30 p.m. and enjoy a night out! Go to dinner, get groceries or just enjoy the peace and quiet. Dinner (pizza) will be provided as well as an evening of activities. Cost is $15/child if registered in advance or $20/child at the door. All money will be given to the Scott family as they prepare for Colby’s upcoming bone marrow transplant.
A Fall Foliage 5K run/walk will take place on Saturday, Sept 28, at the base of Big Rock Mountain in Mars Hill where the leaves will be at their peak. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the Kiddie K will start things off at 9:50 a.m. Walkers will depart at 10 a.m. and runners at 10:15 a.m. A $10 registration fee will be collected to support After The Bell activities. Join us as we celebrate all things fall at our post party and awards. Baked potato bar and apple cider for all spectators and participants after the race.
It was a beautiful race during homecoming and folks have asked to do it again when the leaves had changed so we are!
Register by Sept 13 for a free T-shirt. Mail payment, name, age and T-shirt size to: After The Bell, P. O. Box 1256, Mars Hill, ME 04758.
The Fall Family Photo Day will take place on Sunday, Sept 29, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Join us for our third Family Photo Day! All proceeds this year will benefit After The Bell and Joyfit community! Both programs work to provide activities for children and families in the area. Call or message now to book your 15-minute outdoor photo session with a variety of professional photographers. Families will leave that day with a CD of unedited photos that may then be printed, shared or even used in time for Christmas cards. The mountain will be beautiful and with 15-minute sessions, everyone will be smiling! The cost is $25 for your session.
Call 694-1320 or message Jamie to reserve your spot. Sessions start at 9 a.m. and the last one will be scheduled for 3:45 p.m. Reminder: photo sessions are by appointment only.

Mars Hill Rotary

The Mars Hill Rotary Club gathered on Tuesday morning, Aug. 27, at 6:30 a.m. at the Aroostook Health Center. The special speaker was Ty Thurlow of Central Aroostook High School. He is teaching freshman and sophomore English as well as coaching the Varsity Boys’ Soccer Team.
A 2002 graduate of Lee Academy, he is a runner, competing in one or two marathons each month. Being a marathon runner is a sport that you must prepare for constantly. Keeping in shape year-round is key in being physically and mentally prepared for a marathon. Each race is different — whether it’s the course, the elevation or the cause.
This summer, he participated in the “Across the USA” marathon to benefit the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing, doing his leg in Colorado. While he finished his portion, he definitely felt the difference in elevation!
He also ran in this year’s Boston Marathon himself, finishing in 2 hours, 44 minutes. But his dropping to his knee before his girlfriend, Jerusha Benn, and proposing at the finish line was what made the news in the early times following his race. She said “yes!“ They were on the way out of the city when the bombing took place.
He is busy with school and coaching, but is also doing graduate courses online in his “spare” time.
