HOULTON, Maine — Election results for the town of Houlton show a preference for Republican candidates in statewide and national elections, but Democrat incumbent Mike Carpenter led the town’s voting for the Maine Senate.
The unofficial results show 1,639 votes for incumbent Republican President Donald Trump, compared to 1,046 votes for Democratic challenger and former Vice President Joseph Biden. The town also voted heavily in favor of Aroostook native and incumbent U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, who won 1,843 votes compared to her opponent, Maine House Speaker Sara Gideon, who received 732 votes.
Republican challenger for Maine’s 2nd Congressional District, Dale Crafts, also received just slightly more votes than incumbent Jared Golden, with a total of 1,397 votes compared to 1,277 for Golden.
In the state Legislature races, District 144’s contest for the Maine House of Representatives was won by Republican Tracy Quint, who defeated her challenger Kathryn Harnish with 1,660 votes compared to Harnish’s 956.
In the town’s voting for Maine Senate’s District 2, the town went with incumbent Mike Carpenter, who received 1,477 votes compared to challenger Harold “Trey” Stewart, who received 1,196. Write-in candidate Henry Bear received 23 votes.
In total, 2,760 people voted in the 2020 elections for the town of Houlton. While not the all-time highest number recorded, it signifies a rather large turnout compared to the 2016 elections. This is consistent overall with national elections, which have already seen a record-breaking number of mail-in ballots prior to Election Day. According to the town office, a little more than 1,300 votes were cast via absentee ballot this year.
