FORT KENT, Maine — A champion will not be crowned for the 2020 Aroostook League Division I girls soccer this year after COVID-19 forced the cancellation of the title game.
Top-ranked Fort Kent Community High School was slated to play Caribou in the championship Wednesday afternoon in Fort Kent.
However, when RSU 39 announced Wednesday morning that the Caribou Technology Center and Caribou High School, as well as neighboring Limestone Community School, switched to a “red model” remote learning status until Nov. 18 because of two positive COVID cases in the district, plans to play the championship between the Vikings and Warriors were canceled.
The game will not be rescheduled, according to Caribou Athletic Director Evan Graves.
“It is sad for our student athletes, but the safety of our students and community is a priority,” Graves said.
Warriors Coach Doug Cyr recognized that the pandemic has altered the soccer season, but said he is glad his team was able to play some games.
“We had a great team again this year,” he said. “We’re grateful that we had the opportunity we did.”
