The Mars Hill United Methodist Women met in the church vestry on Monday, Sept. 9, at noon with 11 attending.
Sandwiches, chips and grapes were enjoyed, followed by a delicious dessert made and served by Ruth Sylvester, with her co-hostess Diane Ketchum serving drinks. After a time of socializing, President Donna Brewer opened the business meeting, leading all in the UMW Purpose Pledge and Prayer.
The secretary’s report was read and accepted as read. The treasurer’s report was given by Diane Ketchum, who shared several thank-you notes. It was voted to give $100 towards a fund-raising effort for a very sick child.
The Charge Conference will be in the Mars Hill Methodist Church on Tuesday at 10 a.m. Several members volunteered to help provide a luncheon.
The Northern UMW District Meeting will be held on Oct. 5 in Guilford. Please let President Donna know if you plan to attend and would need a ride.
A brief discussion was held to update the calling list for the Prayer Chain.
The upcoming Fall Luncheon and Sale was discussed with a date of Nov. 2 decided upon. More plans will be made at the next meeting.
The meeting was turned over to Program Chairman Diane Ketchum. She gave a book report on the Life of Philomia Kelley Baker, a Russian citizen who, with her daughter, endured a terrible life trying to escape from the war and other conflicts. She and her daughter finally reached the United States after marrying an American G.I. who was from Fort Kent. The title of the book is “World War II Through the Eyes of a Child — A Flight of Freedom.”
A good-will offering was taken with the money to go to the UMW District Treasurer for World Missions. After the benediction, the meeting was adjourned. Those attending included: Donna Brewer, Joan Boone, Elaine Bailey, Daisy Campbell, Ruth Sylvester, Marie Hewitt, Diane Ketchum, Nina Trask, Frances Banks, Jackie Bradley and Clara Hussey.
Westfield Jubilee Days

GOING LOW — The 19th annual Westfield Jubilee Days took place on the weekend of Sept. 6-8. Iziah Lessard was able to go lower than anyone else doing the Limbo with Tim the Tuneman.

After The Bell
The Fall Family Photo Day will take place on Sunday, Sept. 29, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Join us for our third Family Photo Day! All proceeds this year will benefit After The Bell and Joyfit community! Both programs work to provide activities for children and families in the area. Call or message now to book your 15-minute outdoor photo session with a variety of professional photographers. Families will leave that day with a CD of unedited photos that may then be printed, shared or even used in time for Christmas cards. The mountain will be beautiful and with 15-minute sessions everyone will be smiling; $25 for your session.

Mars Hill Rotary
The Mars Hill Rotary Club gathered on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at 6:30 a.m. at the Aroostook Health Center. The special speaker was Jay Peavey. He spoke about the Speed Trials that he took place in recently. With his 2010 Chevy Camaro, he reached the top speed for his class. Taking place on Loring’s runways, the vehicles are timed at 1 mile, then again at 1.5 miles. His first run saw speeds of 140 and 141. The second and third runs saw him at 145 at both the mile and mile and a half points.
There are multiple classes for vehicles from mopeds to motorcycles to cars, with different safety requirements in each class.
The Loring Timing Association holds the speed races twice a year — in summer and fall. The fall races usually allow a person to make more runs, as there are fewer entries.

Upcoming events for the week of Sept. 18-24 include: Wednesday will have the Beauty Parlor at 8:30 a.m., Cooking Club at 9:30 a.m., Zumba Gold at 1:30 p.m. and United Baptist at 6:30 p.m. Thursday will have the Beauty Parlor at 8:30 a.m., Bingo at 9:30 a.m. and Horse Racing at 1:30 p.m. Friday will feature Bingo Bucks at 9:30 a.m. and Karaoke with Larry and Larry at 1:30 p.m. Saturday will feature Karaoke with the Deschesnes at 1:30 p.m. Sunday will feature Karaoke with Fireman Fred at 1:30 p.m. and Mennonite Hymnsing at 6:30 p.m. Monday will feature Table Tennis at 9:30 a.m., Nail Beautiful at 10 a.m., Karaoke with Larry and Larry at 1:30 p.m. and Gospel Group at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday will feature the Beauty Parlor at 8:30 a.m., Bingo at 9:30 a.m. and a Skip Bo Tournament at 1:30 p.m. All of these activities are subject to change.
