CARIBOU — Summer extends into mid-September, but “It’s Snow-Mazing” already at Goughan’s Berry Farm in Caribou.

Nothing could be more optimistic about a hopefully great winter for outdoor recreation than a snow-loving moose riding a snowmobile — which was artistically rendered in corn by Goughan’s Berry Farm co-owner Mark Goughan. The maze, located at 872 Fort Fairfield Road, is open seven days a week.
This marks the ninth year of the farm’s annual corn maze filled with games and activities, and co-owner Mark Goughan explained that this year’s winter-themed design was created in an attempt to help bolster the local economy. One of The County’s strengths is winter recreation opportunities — whether it’s snowmobiling, cross country skiing, hiking or any one of the recreation options available to everyone once the snow starts flying.
“To symbolize the importance of recreation, you have to look no farther than snowmobiling,” Goughan said, and a snow-loving moose riding a snowmobile will hopefully usher in a great sledding season for the region.
While it’s been a work-in-progress since February to make sure that the maze takes the proper shape, Goughan explained that what’s inside the maze is even more important than its aerial image.
“We believe that [puzzles and games] are the most important part of the maze — the different types of games we present to the public to go out and try to solve,” he said. “It’s always nice to walk around every corner and find something and if you put enough pieces together, you’ll solve the game.”
When the prize for completing the game is a cone of home-made ice cream, it’s no wonder so many choose to diligently scour the maze every year to gather clues — kids and adults alike.
“It gives you an event to perform for 40 minutes to an hour while outside and getting some fresh air,” Goughan said.
The maze is open from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Monday through Saturday, and from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Sunday; special hours can be arranged for groups.
