HOULTON, Maine — A year and a half after it was first formed, the Aroostook Recovery Center of Hope is ready to move to a new home.
The center announced it was moving from its current location, located at 36 North St., to a newer location right off of Market Square, at 59 Main St., in between Courtyard Cafe and the County Co-Op.
Chelsea Putnam, who runs the center as a peer support specialist and volunteer coordinator, said the new location would make it more accessible for people to get to on foot.
“Since we’ve been here, it’s a little bit more difficult for people to walk to,” Putnam said. “We’ve been looking to get downtown since we’ve opened.”
The new location will also put the center in closer proximity to the Aroostook County Jail, which the center works with to help offer inmates resources once they are released.
“We do recovery coaching with them, there’s a male and a female that go in and do that right now,” Putnam said. “We also work with them on re-entry, so when people get out of jail, we can have them come to the recovery center, offer them resources, help them find housing, or any kind of referrals they need.”
The move is expected to take place in between the weekend of Jan. 9-10, with the new location opening on Jan. 11. Due to COVID-19, masks, temperature checks and hand sanitizing are all required for entry to the center.
