Bernard offers Rotary a glimpse at NMCC offerings

MARS HILL NEWS

by Tomi Henderson

The Mars Hill Rotary Club gathered on Tuesday, Sept. 24 at 6:30 a.m. at the Aroostook Health Center. The special speaker was Sue Bernard, dean of development at Northern Maine Community College.

Sue spoke of the 29 current programs offered at NMCC in four areas of study: trades, business, liberal arts and nursing. The college works in conjunction with the University of Maine colleges so students can do two years of study at NMCC and then transfer to UMaine to continue in their chosen field.
Sue also spoke of the upcoming bond issues that will be voted on this November. Number 5 on the ballot will be a $15.5 million bond for the community colleges, of which $900,000 will be used by NMCC to renovate Aroostook Hall into classrooms.
NMCC wants to expand their allied health fields to include courses in medical coding, community para-medicine, EMT and more and needs more classrooms to accomplish this. Recommendations for new courses are brought to the colleges by general advisory committees, who are members from throughout the community and businesses.
Sue is no stranger to Aroostook County. Born and raised in Fort Fairfield, she worked for WAGM for 20 years before moving downstate to be a spokesperson for the Catholic Diocese. She recently moved back to the area and has a daughter in college.

PARENTS’ NIGHT OUT — Seen here are the kids that participated in the first Parents’ Night Out sponsored by AllStar Gymnastics and After The Bell. The children came from all over to enjoy a fun evening, while parents had some time to themselves in the process. The organizations will be hosting monthly Parents’ Night Out sessions to support different causes/events. September’s event allowed the children to show support to the Scott family. Parents can drop their children off for an evening of games, fun, physical activity, pizza and more while they get a night out. Stay tuned for details of our next Parents’ Night Out on Friday, Oct. 18 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Any questions or to find out how we can support your cause, please let Jamie Guerrette, program director with After The Bell, know by calling 694-1320.
