The Easton boys’ varsity soccer team picked up its 10th win of the season without a loss Monday by blanking the Washburn Beavers at home, 4-0. Unfortunately, the Bears will have to wait a month before having a chance to reach 11.
Due to the upcoming harvest recess, Easton, the first-place team in Eastern Maine Class D, does not play another countable game until Oct. 15 when East Grand pays a visit. The Bears have two games remaining after that before the regular season comes to a close.
Easton handled the Beavers with ease behind a pair of brother combinations who figured in all three first-half goals. Cody Halvorson scored unassisted six minutes into the match and five minutes later he assisted on Ian Sotomayor’s goal. About a minute later, Drew Sotomayor scored off a feed from Logan Halvorson.
Nick Clark closed out the scoring by tallying in the second half, with Drew Sotomayor garnering the assist. Jake Flewelling and Cody Halvorson divided the goal-keeping chores and combined for six saves. Easton’s stingy defense has allowed just nine goals through its first 11 matches and has surrounded more than one goal in a game just once.
Jarrett Olson had 15 saves for the Washburn boys, who fell to 5-3-2.
The Washburn girls are preparing for their second match of the season against Ashland Thursday at 7 p.m. on the Hornets’ home field. When the two teams, both undefeated at the time, met for the first time on Sept. 9 in Washburn, Ashland came away with the 4-0 victory.
The Beavers have won both of their games since and did so in convincing fashion.
Washburn is now 9-1 after crushing Hodgdon-GHCA Friday, 11-0, before stopping Easton Monday, 6-1.
Mackenzie Worcester increased her school-record career goal mark to 89 by scoring four times in each match. Joan Overman also had four in the win over Hodgdon-GHCA. Freshman Tori Koch has become another weapon for the Beaver offense as she totaled three goals in the two wins.
The Easton girls’ Elise Allen, also a freshman, prevented the shutout by scoring with 5:14 remaining in the second half. Goalkeepers Hannah Ferris and Blake Bradley were busy in facing 50 shots during the contest. Like the boys’ team, the Easton girls are also idle until Oct. 15.
The Ashland girls proved to be too much for Southern Aroostook last Wednesday as freshman Cassidy Pelletier scored four goals, all off free kicks, to lead the way. Marissa Chasse and LeeAnn McNally added two goals each and Savannah Flint scored the other for the 6-0 winners.
The Ashland boys evened their record at 2-2-2 with a 3-0 victory over SA. Cody Blair scored all three goals in the second half. Mark Chasse picked up a pair of assists and Adam Sessoms had the other. Tim Tarr gained the shutout in goal by stopping seven shots.
The Presque Isle boys and girls were both in action at home Saturday as the Mount Desert Island Trojans made the trip north. The Wildcat boys earned a 5-0 win behind Ben Nickerson’s hat trick and single goals from Tyler Seeley and Chase Norton. PI was 2-1-1 heading into a home game against Fort Kent Tuesday night. Those two teams played to a 1-1 tie in their first meeting Aug. 21.
The Wildcat girls were still winless after four matches heading into their meeting with Fort Kent Tuesday. In the weekend match, PI scored first as Hannah Graham converted a Taylor Williams assist 10 minutes in. However, MDI tied the game 55 seconds later and the two teams went through the remainder of regulation and two overtime sessions still deadlocked.
The Fort Fairfield girls had not played a game in six days heading into Monday’s home contest against Limestone-MSSM, but the offense didn’t show any rust. The Tigers continued its high-scoring ways with a 5-4 win, which was accomplished when Logan Bubar scored 2:47 into overtime.
Janae Libby scored twice and Megan Jellison and Kailanny Hernandez had single goals for the 6-2 Fort squad. Mariah Williams notched a hat trick for the 1-4 Eagles.
The Fort Fairfield boys finally got into the win column after beating Limestone-MSSM, 7-1. Johnny Theriault netted two goals in the first half and two more in the second as his team rolled. Chris Giberson, Greg Jellison and Ryan Player were the Tigers’ other goal scorers, while Chris Bernier netted the Limestone-MSSM goal.
The Central Aroostook boys and girls were victorious in road contests Monday at Hodgdon. Austin Caverhill, Dustin Pryor and Logan Grass were the goal scorers in the boys’ 3-1 win, while Molly Anthony and Karli Levesque had two goals each and Sam Kearney had the other as CA notched a 5-0 victory in the girls’ match.
