Fallen tree leaves 12,000-plus without power in Aroostook

FORT KENT, Maine — A large tree falling on a power line caused a disruption in the transmission of electricity across the Canadian border, leaving 12,151 customers in Aroostook without power on Jan. 26, according to Versant Power. 

Communities from Fort Kent to Fort Fairfield were affected. Among the heaviest hit were Madawaska with 2,459 customers and Fort Kent with 2,371 without power, representing 98 and 97 percent without power, respectively. Frenchville was at 99 percent of the customers without power at 3 p.m.

Crews are working to restore service as quickly as possible, and as of 3 p.m. the estimated restoration time was 4:30 p.m.

Versant reminded motorists to slow down or move over and change lanes, when possible, if approaching utility crews on the road.
