100 Years Ago – Feb. 17, 1921
Fine pickerel catch — Emons Robinson recently made a nice catch of pickerel at Nickerson Lake, bringing home six fish weighing a total of 14 pounds.
Lawyer — Walter A. Conan, a former Winterport attorney and for two years the Waldo County Attorney, is to enter the practice here as a partner with R.W. Shaw.
75 Years Ago – Feb. 14, 1946
Flour famine hits Houlton — The flour crisis which moved from the Middle West last week when the news was released from Washington of an impending heavy shipment overseas hit Houlton the first of the week. Grocers in the area now report their stocks of flour are completely exhausted. Housewives, fearing that they would be left with no flour, made a rush on local stores quickly exhausting what local supply was available.
First step in modernization — The first step in the modernization plans of the Houlton Grange Store have been nearly completed. Taking the grocery department as the first part of the store to be completely streamlined, a new semi-self service department has also been created. Also a new frozen food display cabinet and a new meat case have also been added to the store. New lighting fixtures will make for an up to date food retail feeling in every respect.
50 Years Ago – Feb. 17, 1971
Herbert to head Farmers Home Caribou office — Athill B. Herbert, Assistant County Supervisor, at the Island Falls office has accepted the position of County Supervisor in the Caribou FFA office, effective February 22.
HRDC director joins board of Planning Commission — Thomas A. McGillicuddy, executive director of the Houlton Regional Development Corporation, has been appointed to the Executive Board of the Northern Maine Regional Planning Commission in the Houlton area.
