HOULTON, Maine — Several Aroostook County high school basketball athletes were recognized Feb. 24 for their accomplishments on hardwood.
Caribou’s Sawyer Deprey was among those lauded as he was named as one of 10 semifinalists for Maine’s Mr. Basketball title, the state’s highest honor for basketball players.
Other finalists are Parker Desjardins, Forest Hills; Kobe Gilbert, Piscataquis; Dylan Griffin, Thornton Academy; Wyatt Hathaway, Leavitt; Dylan Huff, Brewer; Payton Jones, Thornton Academy; Cash McClure, Maranacook; Matt Parent, Messalonskee; and Andrew Szwez, Bangor.
The Maine McDonald’s/Maine Association of Basketball Coaches also announced its “Senior All-Stars,” more commonly known as the McDonald’s All Stars, with several County players gaining recognition.
Central Arooostook’s Maci Beals and Libby Grass, along with Southern Aroostook’s Kacy Daggett were selected to the Girls Class C/D North team.
For boys basketball, Deprey was named to the Boys AA/A/B North team, while Easton’s Austin Carver, Fort Fairfield’s Kadin Barnes and Van Buren’s Isaiah Morales were selected for the Boys C/D North team.
Presque Isle’s Faith Sjoberg was selected for the Girls Foul Shooters award.
Traditionally, All-Star games would be played, along with free throw competitions, but those games will not be held this year due to COVID-19. The foul shooting event will be held virtually.
