SOUTH PORTLAND – Charlott M. Porter, 97, passed away at her home in South Portland, on Thursday, Oct. 17, 2013. She was born on August 24, 1916, to James and Ida “Beaumont” Marley in Smyrna, Maine. She married Irwin Porter of Presque Isle in September, 1942, and they shared 54 years of marriage, raising two children.
Charlott believed in giving to others in many ways. She was foremost a teacher and a reader. Having graduated from Ricker Junior College and Aroostook State Teachers College, she began her teaching career in a one-room school house in Smyrna, ME. After her marriage, she was instrumental in establishing the Abel J. Morneault Memorial Library of Van Buren. While living in Presque Isle, she taught Sunday school at the Presque Isle Congregational Church, led a Girl Scout troop, and supported her children’s various school activities. She also taught adult non-readers and assisted shut-ins and those less fortunate. She was an active member of the Pierian Club. At age 80, while in Florida, she participated for several years in a national program called “STAIRS- Start the Adventure in Reading” which provided an after school, one-on-one tutoring program to second-graders who were having difficulty learning to read.
After the death of her husband in 1997, Charlott moved to Cape Elizabeth. She became a member of the First Congregational Church of South Portland. She enjoyed the fellowship of Leisurely Lectionary and SAGE, organized the Monday Bridge Group for many years, and served with other parishioners monthly at the Wayside Soup Kitchen, retiring her bread knife after 10 years.
Beside her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by her sister, Elspie Marley. Surviving are her children, David and Linda Porter of Norway, and Ruth and Tom Cellupica of South Portland, with whom she lived. Her grandchildren are Kristen Porter of Roslindale, MA, Ken and Jessica Cellupica of Cannonsburg, PA, Jeff and Stephanie Porter of Slatersville, RI, Karin and Brian Loretz of Marlborough, CT, and Noelle Cellupica of Portland, ME. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends she made throughout her life journey.
Visiting hours were held from 4:30 – 6 p.m., with a memorial service at 6 p.m., on Sunday, October 20, at the Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland.
