100 Years Ago – March 30, 1921
Business trip — Alton Titcomb, prop. of the Houlton Ice and Coal Company, returned home Friday from a business trip to Boston where he attended a meeting of coal dealers.
Easter dinner at the Snell House — Mercier Bros., the popular proprietors of the Snell House, served a special Easter menu on Sunday which was enjoyed by an unusually large number of traveling men, besides nearly 100 local people, all of whom were lavish in their praises for the most excellent food and service. During the dinner hour Prof. Joe Bower’s fine 5 piece orchestra furnished excellent music.
75 Years Ago – March 27, 1946
Houlton band is now rehearsing — Those interested in a band for this community lost no time in carrying out their plans after an appropriation of $1600 was provided by the voters of the town meeting. Under the direction of Emmons Robinson, rehearsals are now going on weekly in the old armoury on Water Street and the series of outdoor concerts in Monument Park in June to continue all summer.
Ricker received gift of $1,000 — Principal Roy Haines last week announced the receipt of a check for $1000 from Dr. George Averill of Waterville for the Ricker restoration fund. Dr. Averill is chairman of the Board of Trustees of Coby College.
50 Years Ago – March 30, 1971
Adult education center — A total of 147 persons have been registered for the 12 courses being offered this spring in the Adult Education Program at Katahdin High School in Sherman. A new course is being offered this year for nurse’s aides, which was filled almost immediately.
Dunn’s new home — The Dunn Furniture Company opened its new store on the North Road this morning. Built at a cost in excess of $250,000, the modern new store has been termed by Donald Dunn as a “showcase unlike any other store in New England.” All on one floor, the store offers 30,000 square feet of space, some 25 percent more than Dunn’s occupied for years at their main street location.
25 Years Ago – March 27, 1996
Another driver — Allen Bulley, manager of Andy’s IGA, congratulated Wade Hersey on being the recipient of a Soap Box Derby Car Kit courtesy of Andy’s IGA. Hersey is age 9 and is the son of Glen and Nancy Hersey of Oakfield. The Soap Box Derby is being held June 14-15 in Houlton.
Teamwork — Jobs for Maine Graduates at Hodgdon High School are part of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation team, which is preparing for a Walk-A-Thon/Run on April 20 to benefit research projects for the number one genetic killer of children and young adults. A CF Foundation T-shirt will be given to participants raising $35.00 during the CG Walk-A- Thon/Run. Receiving T-shirts were Suzanne Rodweller, Erin Shea, Chris Ivey and Elizabeth Morery.
