CARIBOU, Maine — The National Weather Service in Caribou is warning County residents to stay clear of flooded areas this weekend.
On Friday the NWS notified Fort Fairfield residents of a continuing ice jam downstream of the bridge near the US-Canada border. Both the Russell Road and Riverside Avenue remain closed Friday afternoon. The warning is in effect until at least 11:30 p.m. Friday.
The NWS has also issued a flood watch for northeastern and northewestern Aroostook that extends until 3:34 p.m. Saturday. Ice jams remain along the Aroostook and St. John Rivers, the warning said, and could potentially break up and move with little notice. Minor flooding in lowland areas remains possible throughout Saturday.
Towns and cities within the flood watch area include Mars Hill, Presque Isle, Ashland, Caribou, Fort Kent, Madawaska, Frenchville, Van Buren and Allagash.
The NWS is urging residents to not drive on flooded roads, as most drowning accidents occur in vehicles.
