100 Years Ago – April 21, 1921
New officers — At the annual meeting of the Fidelity Trust Co. held in Portland last week, two former Houlton men were among the officers elected. Major Roland Clark was appointed vice president in charge of the Bond Department, and Hon. Leonard Pierce was elected a member of its advisory board.
Shop has new owner — Mrs. Blanche L. Inman has purchased the Gift Shop, so called, from Julia Reynolds and took possession Saturday.
75 Years Ago – April 17, 1946
Dairy Committee elects officers — Fred Corliss of Sherman was elected chairman of the Dairy Herd Improvement Association at a recent meeting of the Dairy Committee held in Island Falls.
Water Company elects — At the meeting of the Houlton Water Company held Tuesday night, James Madigan was re-elected president. Oscar Benn was named vice president and Robert Williams, secretary. A.M. Stackpole was re-elected as treasurer.
50 Years Ago – April 21, 1971
Dunkin Donuts eyes location — Negotiations are underway, according to the Houlton Regional Development Corporation, between Dunkin Donuts and Earl Stoton for a lease on the Stoton property at Union Square and the construction of a Dunkin Donuts business.
Sportwelt closed — Sportwelt Shoe Company has ceased operations and is expected to vacate its building at Houlton International Airport within the next few weeks. Sportwelt has been in Houlton since 1963.
25 Years Ago – April 17, 1996
Monticello plans a three-day celebration for sesquicentennial — To commemorate its Sesquicentennial, Monticello is planning a three-day celebration, complete with many activities and events enabling everyone to participate and join the festivities.
Another trip — Formann and Matthew Swallow are getting ready for another trip down the Meduxnekeag River during the annual Houlton Rotary Canoe River Race on Saturday, April 27. The Swallows teamed up starting in 1990 and look forward to the challenge of the river this year.
