100 Years Ago – April 27, 1921
Burleigh Hotel gets face lift — Thomas Habbeb is making extensive alterations on the building on Sweden Street known as the Burleigh Hotel. It is being made into a lodge with about 30 rooms.
School play — “Just Plain Dot” was presented by the Grammar School Thursday and Friday night. The parts were taken by the children and much credit is due them. The net proceeds of the evening was $84.00.
75 Years Ago -April 24, 1946
Another potato superlative — Caribou, noted for being the largest potato shipping town in the world, will claim one more distinction – home of the world’s largest potato plant.
Much dust — Dust levels in Caribou are at an all time high. Town manager Burns said no calcium chloride is available to lessen the dust this year.
50 Years Ago – April 27, 1971
Auction proceeds up to $4,000 — With proceeds of the 4-H Old Fashioned Country Auction amounting to just under $4,000, Alban Cyr of Caribou, chairman of the first such event held in Aroostook County, has expressed great satisfaction with the results.
Construction underway on refrigeration plant — Two weeks of advance work on construction of the new cold storage plant on the Grimes Mill development site is seen as assurance that Int’l Refrigeration, Inc., will indeed meet its expectations of being “in business” in Caribou by Nov. 1st.
25 Years Ago – April 24, 1996
DARE Support — Jeanette Hanson, auxiliary president of Lister Knowlton VFW Post 9389 of Caribou, recently made a $1,000 donation to support the 18 week DARE Program in local schools. The check was presented to Steve Michaud, the Caribou Police Dept.’s DARE Officer.
Ketch named BPW “Woman of the Year” — The Caribou Business and Professional Women’s Club has named journalist Brenda Ketch its “Woman of the Year.” BPW President Norma Milton presented Ketch with a plaque and pin in recognition of her achievements during a luncheon on April 17. Ketch, a photographer and reporter for the Aroostook Republican for the past 18 years, was nominated for the honor based on her commitment to professional excellence and service to the community.
