100 Years Ago – May 18, 1921
Ballasting on B & A Railroad — Mr. T.L. Eyre of Philadelphia has taken the contract for the ballasting the line of the B & A Railroad. Work has already begun in Hudson and also in Houlton and will continue until the job is completed. Mr C.M. Johnston is the construction manager, supervising the work, while Mr. Blair of the same company will be in charge.
Transferring south— Robert A. Mill, who has served for six years as local manager for the Houlton Hide and Wool Company, has been transferred to the Bangor branch, effective June 1. Mr. Mills and his family have many great friends in the area and will miss them.
75 Years Ago – May 15, 1946
New property owner — Wallace Lawler has purchased the property at 57 Court Street owned by Judson Tray. His future plans for the property are unclear at this time.
Youth council formation — Director of Recreation Robert Hunter announced today that a youth council has been formed to assist him in the operation of the Community Center. The president is Fay Fong Yee, and the vice president is John Wallewyn, and serving as secretary will be Jean Lambert.
50 Years Ago -May 18, 1971
Early admissions are up substantially at Ricker — Ricker College Dean of Admissions Harold Emerson said Tuesday that admissions to the college have increased more than 40 percent over the number at the same time last year.
Gulf dealers contending for $2 million in prizes — Gulf Service Station Dealers throughout the area are competing in the biggest dealer incentive program Gulf has ever sponsored. Putnam Brothers Company of Houlton, Gulf Distributors said its dealers are actively involved in the program which will continue through September 30.

No time to waste — With nearly 200 customers waiting for fresh fiddleheads, local Gerald Jackins doesn’t waste any time. Part of his cleaning method involves using a large fan to blow the cooper colored peelings from his harvest.
Antique nursing equipment on display at Houlton Regional Hospital — As part of National Nurses Week Celebration at Houlton Regional Hospital, last week, items from an extensive collection of antique nursing equipment were on display in the lobby of the hospital. Theresa Wood, a retired nurse who served patients at HRH as well and Madigan Memorial for many years, provided the items. A leather nurse’s kit, carried by her husband’s Aunt Alma of Monticello during WWII in France, was just one of the fascinating items on display.
