Katahdin Middle-High School announces honor parts for 2021

STACYVILLE, Maine — Katahdin Middle-High School Superintendent/Principal Marie Robinson has announced the honor parts for the Class of 2021.

Emma McGraw has been named valedictorian, while Hannah Boone is the salutatorian. Also named as honors students were Staci-Lea Anderson, Riley DeTour, Sylvia Hartt, Danielle Libby, Emma McNally and Kaden McNally.

McGraw, the daughter of Tori and Raymond McGraw, has won numerous awards including Science awards, Academic Achievement, and the Kauffmann Environmental Writing Award honorable mention award. 

She has been a member of the National Honor Society, and participates in soccer. She belongs to the Friends of Baxter State Park, Katahdin Woods and Waters, and has volunteered clearing trails, reconstructing a bridge, placing stepping stones, as well as doing independent photography, research and study of the area. 

Other community projects she has assisted with many activities including working with students from other high schools, instructing elementary students to ski, assisting with Bible studies at Calvary Baptist Church, worship leadership, volunteer camp staff at Living Waters Bible Camp, assistant dance instructor at Studio One Dance and Acrobatic Center, and music teacher for the youth. 

McGraw will attend Grand Canyon University for a degree in Christian Studies. 

Boone, the daughter of Israel and Rebecca Boone, will study business administration at the University of Maine in Machias. She is the owner and operator of Hannah Boone Photography, and a product maker at “Goodnyou?” 

Boone will have completed six college classes at Katahdin when she graduates this year. She has been class president and co-editor of the yearbook, a band leader and conductor, writing her own original songs. She was a STEM Fair winner twice, a National Honor Society member, and she has also been a member of Student Council. Hannah can often be found volunteering at festivals and events such as the Veteran and Memorial Days events, the Fiddlehead Festival or at Church Bible School or the local nursing home, 

The following students also received honor status. 

Staci-Lea Anderson, the daughter of Stacy and Amanda Anderson, is going to the University of Maine in Augusta to become a dental hygienist. She has been a member of the National Honor Society, and participated in conventions in 2019. She was accepted into the National Technical Honor Society in her Junior year to represent academic excellence in Law Enforcement. She has been on the honor roll all four years of high school. 

Riley DeTour, the son of Michael and Julie DeTour, has been on the honor roll all four years of high school. He will have completed four college classes when he graduates. He has been a STEM Fair winner twice and National Honor Society student. He is known at school for his leadership, teamwork and problem solving skills. He has assisted with instruction in guitar class, and is a member of Modern Band. DeTour has been offered the Captain William Bullard Scholarship and Merit Scholarship. He has not yet decided between going to Maine Maritime for Marine Biology, or University of Maine at Orono for a Liberal Arts major.

Sylvia Hartt, the daughter of Andy Hartt and Sherri Skinner, achieved the Hughes Honors during her freshman and sophomore years. She has accumulated over 150 volunteer hours in the past three years, and was a member of the Student Council and National Honor Society. As a member of Friends of Baxter State Park, she maintained world class trails at Baxter State Park and Katahdin Woods and Waters, constructed a bridge, installed stepping stones, trimmed brush, and worked collaboratively with other teammates, She also worked part time at Flatlanders restaurant and Mount Chase Lodge. As a Conservation Fellow, she has hiked over 55 miles, kayaked and backpacked into several ponds and studied fish and trails at Baxter State Park. She also helped coach middle school soccer and assisted with dog sled races. She is participating in an “internship” at the Enfield Hatchery where she has volunteered approximately 30 hours helping to stock and spawn fish, as well as jar eggs and sort them. Hartt is going to go to the University of Maine at Orono to major in wildlife ecology. 

Danielle Libby, the daughter of Travis and Brandy Libby, enjoys working with the public and has worked as a waitress, CNA, and cashier. She played basketball for four years, soccer for three years, volleyball for two years and has been in the Snowsled Club for two years. She was selected to the Basketball All Tourney Team, and to the All Aroostook Basketball. Libby has been involved with the Read Across America program, and has been a member of the National Honor Society for the last two years. She has been on the Katahdin High School honor roll for four years. Libby will attend the University of Maine at Presque Isle to obtain her degree in nursing. 

Emma McNally, the daughter of James and Alicia McNally, is a member of Student Council and National Honor Society. She played basketball, volleyball and softball and was the captain for varsity soccer. McNally was vice president of her class and president of the National Honor Society, as well as Student Council Representative. She has taken three college courses and is OSHA certified. She worked part time as a server at Flatlanders BBQ, at McNally Farm, and volunteered at Green Valley, Katahdin Critters, Vacation Bible school and Red Cross. McNally is also artistic and paints as well as plays the flute and piano. She is in the Pep Band. McNally will attend The University of Maine at Presque Isle to major in exercise science. 

Kaden McNally, the son of Justin and Stefanie McNally, is a member of the National Honor Society. He has played soccer and was varsity captain for two years, and All Aroostook Soccer 2020. He played basketball all four years and was a varsity captain for two years. He did chorus his freshman and sophomore years, was in the National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, and was on the honor roll all four years of high school. He worked at Katahdin Forest Products and took the CNA course at Region 2. McNally will attend the University of Maine at Orono for a degree in business administration.
