75 Years Ago – May 30, 1946
Scholarship at the University of Maine — David Francis Akeley of Presque Isle was among 70 students at the University of Maine who received scholarships and prizes at the annual Scholarship Recognition Day exercises in Memorial Gymnasium.
Akeley won honors by receiving the Class of 1905 Scholarship and one of the University Scholarships. The 1905 Scholarship is donated by members of the class of 1905 and is awarded to a man in the freshman class pursuing the regular curriculum, whose deportment is satisfactory, and who attains the highest rank in the mid-year examinations. The University Scholarship is awarded annually to students of high scholastic standing and intellectual promise.
Count Republican committee chairman — Lewis D. Bearce of Caribou, former chairman of the Aroostook County Republican committee, was re-elected to that position at the biennial organization meeting held at Mars Hill. The election of Mr. Bearce, not a member of the committee, followed a vote by those present, either in person or by proxy, to go outside the current membership to select a chairman. The motion passed 11 to 8.
Degree at the University of Wisconsin — Irving A. Randall, Presque Isle, the son of C. O. Randall, a student at the University of Wisconsin, received the degree of master of philosophy at the 93rd annual commencement exercises of the state’s major educational institution on May 25.
50 Years Ago – June 2, 1971
Promoted to district manager — Gerald W. Jameson, son of Mr. and Mrs. G.B. Jameson of Presque Isle, was promoted to distribution manager of the American Thread Company in Los Angeles, California. Jameson graduated from Presque Isle High School, attended Husson College in Bangor and completed his education in marketing research and business management in Modesto Jr. College and Stanislavs State College in Turlock, Calif. He previously worked as assistant manager of the American Thread Company in Trulock. He and his wife, Linda, had two daughters, Joni and Kmberly Rae, and lived in La Puente, California.
President of Ashland NHS — Members of the Ashland Community High School chapter of the National Honor Society held their final meeting of the year on May 25. President Rosemary Beaulier presided. Officers for the school year 1971-72 were elected. The president appointed Margaret Michaud, Linda Theriault and Kevin Bushey to serve as tellers. Elected were: Robert Sirois, president; Doris Good, vice president; Margaret Michaud, secretary; Denise Campbell, treasurer; Kevin Bushey, Patricia Morin, Jennifer Theriault and Linda Theriault, executive committee. G. Caroline Morris, advisor and Rosemary Beaulier, president, both congratulated members and new officers and spoke about activities for the following year.

Easton family received farming honors — The Maine Potato Blossom Festival Committee and the Farm Family of the Year Selection Committee were pleased to announce that the Viola Flewelling Family of Easton with sons Gaylen and Gerald were selected as the Outstanding Farm Family of the Year for 1996. The Flewelling’s were selected from an extensive list of nominees from throughout Aroostook County. The 49th Annual Maine Potato Blossom Festival was dedicated in their honor and they were recognized at the Annual Industry Dinner. The Maine Potato Blossom Festival established a listing of events for Festival week.
Cane recipient — Ninety-five-year-old John Dickinson accepted the Boston Post Cane from Town Manager Eugene Conlogue in the presence of Linda Seward and town historian Mary Humphrey.
Ashland teens participated in the Youth Leadership Program — Seven students and two faculty advisors from Ashland Community High School completed the Young Leaders Program held at the state YMCA Campground in Winthrop. This program was a three-day motivational and challenging skills seminar designed to instill basic leadership, organizational and team concept skills to student leaders. Instruction was conducted in both classroom and outdoor learning. Students participating in the program included: Doug Kidder, Tim Mega, Mark Weaver, Alison Libby, Jessica Long, Briana Carney and Nikki Fournier. Faculty members taking part included Carol Jacobs and Ron Grover.
