100 Years Ago – June 15, 1921
Vocal students perform — The vocal pupils of Miss Mary Burpee gave a very interesting recital at the Houlton High School auditorium Wednesday evening.
New road — As usual the Town of Linneus has built a fine piece of state road around Coyle Hill and work was supervised by superintendent Henry Stewart, who knows how to build as good a piece of road as can be built, and many towns could learn something from Henry when it comes to building state aid roads.
75 Years Ago – June 12, 1946
Track champions — Houlton High School’s track team won the Aroostook title this week. Houlton won a hard win in the first event since 1941.
Small crowd at band concert — A crowd estimated at 300 attended and enjoyed the first public concert presented by the Houlton Band Concert in the Temple Theater Thursday night. The program was presented by the band members in their campaign to raise money to pay for new uniforms.
50 Years Ago – June 15, 1971
Potato Feast on June 30 — The 12th Annual Houlton Potato Feast sponsored by the Houlton Chamber of Commerce will be held on Wednesday, June 30. This year’s affair promises to be as well received as those of the past few years, according to the Chamber President Eugene Hutchinson.
Self-service in style — The new State Liquor Store that opened in Houlton Monday is the first self-service unit North of Augusta. It offers wall-to-wall carpeting, and all items to be sold are on display. Among the displays are commemorative bottles. Piped-in music is also a feature in the new store.
25 Years Ago – June 12, 1996
HRH gets sterile units — Recently, the Houlton Regional Hospital Services Foundation helped the hospital meet higher standards recommended for the sterilization of surgical equipment. Two “Sterile Units” were purchased for the hospital, one for the Ambulatory Care Unit and the other for the Operating Room Department. The Steris Units are used to sterilize the equipment faster and safer.
Upholstery shop building larger facility — Sheila Fletcher, of County Upholstery in Linneus, says her business has grown so fast that she will have to move to a bigger building by summer. Fletcher started her furniture and vehicle seat recovering business just over 18 months ago, and demand for her services has grown by leaps and bounds, she said.
